Gulmay Medical launch new mobile 100kV treatment system

The new XSTRAHL 100 mobile is an extension to the well established XSTRAHL range of superficial and orthovoltage X-ray therapy systems. The XSTRAHL 100 features a PC based controller and is suitable for treating Basal and Squamous cell carcinoma along with Grenz ray treatments for extreme cases of Psoriasis and Eczema. This is made possible by the extremely stable Gulmay generator that can continuously function from 10-100kV. In order to achieve the correct beam quality there are five filter stations that are easily selected using a rotating filter carousel. Users can specify any beam quality up to 5mmAl.

The XSTRAHL 100 features one handed operation with electromagnetic brakes, therefore unlike the old X-ray machines; there is no need to tighten handles and clamps in order to fix the tube position. It also allows a free hand to stabilize the treatment area and ensure the applicator is positioned correctly.

The PC based control system intuitively encourages the user to input patients data and stores all the treatment parameters, even during a loss of power. The control system links to modern record and verify systems allowing seamless integration into any modern radiotherapy department.

The mobile XSTRAHL 100 wheels easily into the room, however, Gulmay Medical appreciate that all Therapy X-ray machines have to conform to local safety requirements. The XSTAHL 100 mobile is supplied with a static interface that allows the warning lights, emergency stop and door interlocks to be connected to the Gulmay Medical controller. Filters and applicators are also encoded to ensure maximum patient safety.

One of the key challenges in producing mobile therapy X-ray systems is having sufficient tube cooling.

Gulmay Medical considered limiting the x-ray on time, but instead, produced a small high capacity cooler. This means multiple areas can be treated without having to wait for the system to cool down. There is also no restriction on treatment time so both low and high dose-rate treatments can be delivered.

The mobility of the new XSTRAHL 100 makes it suitable for shared installations with Linear Accelerators, CT simulators and Brachytherapy machines.

Martin Robinson Managing Director of Gulmay Medical commented “We decided to produce a mobile version of our popular 100kV system, to suit the requirements of clinicians replacing their old Philips and Siemens machines. Our goal was to produce a safe, stable machine that had the ability to interface simply to the safety requirements for the treatment room and be moved out of the way when necessary. We put a lot of work into creating a fresh modern piece of equipment that fits easily into a modern radiotherapy practice.”

The new Mobile XSTRAHL 100 was officially launched at 51st ASTRO annual meeting in Chicago.
